It is important here to only know that Sir Joseph Reid was exiled to the North American colonies. He eventually settled in Augusta County, Virginia about 1746. The part of Augusta County in which he settled would become Botetourt County in 1770 and Rockbridge County in 1778. He brought his wife Ann Gordon, and his young son, Nathaniel Reid, with him. Soon after settling in Augusta County, Anne gave birth to another son, William Reid, December 14, 1746. Anne was obviously expecting during the eight-week trip to the new world. In 1771, William Reid was mentioned in Chalkley's Chronicles where the author was describing the location of land purchased by Francis Patton as being at the "corner William Reid, Robert Terrol." In 1778, both Joseph and William were listed as Tithables in Morton's "A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia". Joseph is listed again in 1782, but not William because he had already moved to North Carolina.
Not much is known about William and his parents in their new home. I do know that Nathaniel Reid, William's brother and Joseph's oldest son, married Elizabeth Clayton June 5, 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. William married Jane Anderson in Augusta County, Virginia March 10, 1765. William and Jane had eight children. Five of their children were listed in Joseph's family bible. Eight children were listed in William's last will and testament: the five children mentioned in the family bible plus three additional children born after 1770. The difference can be easily explained because of the missing pages from Joseph's bible. Information about the last three children must be on those missing pages. Nathaniel and Elizabeth may have had additional children for the same reason.
