John Thompson served as first lieutenant in the 7th Virginia Regiment from 18 Mar 1776 until 28 Oct 1776 when he resigned. Early in 1778 he was appointed adjutant of Col. William Henry's regiment of Virginia militia. On 7 Jun 1781, while distributing orders to the officers of the regiment, he was taken prisoner by the British but later paroled. On 8 Apr 1782 he took the oaths as captain of the Fluvanna County militia. In March and again in Dec 1805 he was commissioned sheriff of Mercer Co., KY.
