John Preston's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died was correct then he was born around 1702. His first confirmed sighting is on 5th May 1729 when he was married at Ewerby in Lincolnshire to Bridget Vincent.

After their marriage they settled in the neighbouring village of Kirkby la Thorpe, where they had nine children baptised between 1730 and 1745. One daughter died as a baby in 1733, and one of their sons died at the age of fourteen in 1750.

Bridget died in 1753. She was said to be 49 years old.

John's eldest daughter married in 1755, and his first known grandchild was born in 1757.

John married again on 20th December 1756 to a widow called Elizabeth Simmerson, formerly Hunter. They were married for just under thirteen years. She died in 1769, when she was said to be 66 years old.

John had at least 23 grandchildren born in his lifetime, although some died young.

John died in 1777, being buried at Kirkby la Thorpe on 6th July. He was described as a carpenter and said to be 75 years old.
