John Beard McMillin and his brother, James Jefferson McMillin moved from Gallia County, Ohio to Hancock County, Illinois about 1857. They most likely traveled by the Ohio River, then up the Mississippi River. About 1869, the families of John and James moved to Richland County, WI. John moved to Clayton township in Crawford County, WI about 1880. John's birthdate is calculated from his death record (incorrectly states Nov. 22, 1824.) The age at death was 73 years, one month, 29 days. His tombstone correctly gives the birthdate as Nov. 22, 1834. His grandson, Clarence M. McMillen, was my grandfather. Gramps told us the story of his Grandfather (and brother) traveling up the Mississippi River to Wisconsin. Later on, my research would show that John was in living in Hancock County, Illinois with his brother James in 1860 before moving up to Wisconsin.

The youngest brother, Willard Franklin McMillin, was probably in Hancock County in the township of Warsaw in 1860. I found only one census record that matches his age: Franklin McMillin, age 24 (abt 1838), and single.

1840 CENSUS: OHIO, Columbiana Co., Middleton Twp. Only the head of household (Henry McMillin) is shown in this census. John is counted as: Male, Age 5 to 9.

1850 CENSUS: OHIO, Gallia, Huntington Townshp. John is age 16 living with parents and siblings.

1860 CENSUS: ILLINOIS, Hancock, Pilot Grove Township Can NOT locate John B. McMillin. Eliza Parsons & her family are living in Dwelling #3097. Brother James J. & family are in Dwelling #3089. Date of census is July 21, 1860 and he married Eliza two weeks later. Eliza is living with her parents, Charles & Delilah Parsons and her daughter, Nancy Peters, age 4.

Marriage License, Hancock County, Illinois, August 5, 1860: MR. JOHN MCMILLEN married Miss Eliza Ann Peters (nee Parsons). John attests that he is over 21 years of age and has never been married. John signs his name with an "X" as "his mark" as witnessed by the County Clerk.
