    John Lynch
    Birth: 1740
    Death: Oct. 31, 1820

    Founder of Lynchburg. In 1757 at age 17 he began a ferry service on the James River on property owned by his father Charles Lynch. In 1784 John Lynch petitioned the Virginia General Assembly for a town charter. In October 1786 it was granted, and the town of Lynchburg was founded. In 1806 he donated land for a public cemetery in Lynchburg which is now known as the Old City Cemetery. He is buried on land donated by his mother for a Quaker burying ground at the South River Meeting House.
