Guthrey, John - entered service in Maryland in 1777; transferred to Virginia regiment in 1780; granted Pension age 65 in West Fallsfield, Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1818; Bounty Land Warrant #691 issued there 4/21/1818; resided 1820 in Augusta County, Virginia with son James when soldier when deceased & had daughters Anne/Anna, Betsy & youngest Jane, all over age 20; died 11/24/1820 at home of son James; query letter in file states another Revolutionary War Soldier John Guthrie resided in Franklin County, Virginia, after Revolutionary War, married Nancy Crump, moved to Bedford County, Virginis, thence to Kentucky. F-S37968, R1148.

    On this eight day of May 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Court of
    Common pleas &c for the Co of Chester for the said district, personally appeared John Guthrey aged 65 years, resident in West Fallofield in the said district, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war:” That he, the said John Guthrey enlisted in Capt Oharas [O’Hara’s] Co. in the state of Maryland & transferred into the company commanded by Captain Benjamin Biggs [pension application W1366] of the State of Virginia in the year 1777: that he continued to serve in the said corps, or in the service of the United States until the 26 of July 1783, when he was discharged from service in fort Pitt state of Pennsy’a, that he was in the battles of [blank] and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.
    These are to certify that the bearer hereof John Guthry private in the first Virginia regiment, having faithfully served the United States from the month of March 1777 & being enlisted for the war, is hereby discharged from the American army.

    Registered in the books of the regiment/ William Ekridge [sic: William Eskridge W4192] Lieut & Adjutant War Office 1783 The within Certificate shall not avail the bearer as a discharge, until the ratification of the definitive treaty of peace; previous to which time, & until proclamation thereof shall be made, he is to be considered as being on furlough.
    I do certify that John Guthrie has only received four months pay since the commencement of the year 1782.

    State of Virginia/ Augusta County, to wit, On this 29th day of July in the year 1820, in open court, being a court of record of Augusta County, (in which proceedings are had according to the course of the common Law, which has unlimited jurisdiction within said County, has the power of fine and imprisonment, and has all its proceedings duly registered, personally appeared John Guthrey aged sixty seven years, resident in the said County of Augusta, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath declare, that he served in the Revolutionary war as follows viz He was enlisted by a Mr Elliot in the State of Maryland in the Spring of the year 1777 he was then marched to Fort Pitt, and attached to Capt OHara’s independant company and about the year 1780 transfered to Capt Benjamin Bigges Company in the 13th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colo John Gibson on continental establishment and continued in the regular service from the time of his enlistment aforesaid till the 26th of July 1783 when he was discharged at Fort Pitt. That he heretofore made his declaration under the act of Congress of the 18th of March 1818; and been placed on the pension list from the 8th day of May 1818; the certificate dated the 13th day of June 1818 and numbered 1069 The said John Guthrey Doth solemnly swear that he was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that he has not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of his property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring himself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War” passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that he has not nor has any person in trust for him any property or securities contracts or debts due to him nor has he any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by him subscribed. – He further made oath as aforesaid, that his occupation is that of a farmer and house carpenter, but he is too old and infirm to be capable of hard labour, and altogether unable to earn a support for himself; and can only be supported by Public or private charity, that his wife is dead, that he has four children, one son & three daughters, James, Annie, Betsy and Jane, the youngest upwards of twenty years of age and all able to earn their living – he has no house of his own and lives with his son James.
    Schedule of the property of John Guthrey. A Patent for One Hundred Acres of Land in the State of Ohio, which I have never seen; which I got for my services in the Revolutionary war, – A note on Jacob Miller for £15.11.10 executed about the year 1793, said Miller having removed to the State of Indiana it is uncertain if ever I get it. Two final settlement certificates amounting to Two Hundred & three Dollars 33cts which I lost in the year 1790 and have petitioned congress three different sessions to have them renewed but have got nothing, some small debts owing to me not amounting in the whole to five Dollars, He swears that he is twice as much in debt as all the property he can command in worth
