About John Cunningham

From Annals of Augusta County, Virginia, from 1726 to 1871, by Joseph A. Waddell (1902) [114], pp. 261–62:

John Cunningham, believed to have been a brother of Robert, lived in Staunton, his residence being on Lot No. 1, southwest corner of Augusta street and Spring Lane. He had three daughters and one son. His oldest daughter was Mrs. Margaret Reed, who was baptized by Mr. Craig in 1747, and died in 1827. Another daughter, Isabella, married Major Robert Burns, and was the mother of Mrs. Waterman and Mrs. Gambill, of Rockingham. The third daughter of John Cunningham, Elizabeth, married Captain Thomas Smith. The daughters of Capt. Smith were Mrs. Michael Garber, Mrs. Moses McCue, and Mrs. John Jones. Captain Walter Cunningham, only son of John, removed to Kentucky in 1788, and thus the name disappeared from the county.

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 466.—27th February, 1749. Same (From William Beverley) to John Cunningham, of Town of Staunton, 2 lots in Staunton, Nos. 1 and 7; also woodland lots Nos. 2 and 3, 60A each. Delivered Francis Beaty, 1752. Livery by a latch of the door.

• John Coningham (Cunningham) of Staunton, ordinary keeper (Beverley Manor, from Wm. Beverley (by Lewis and Madison), 107 acres, part of Mill Tract; 1550 acres joining the town whereon Court House stands; corner James Brown's leased land; James Miller's line; Col. Lewis's lot, 99-year term, 1750, 5 April 1750 from Chalkley's (incorrectly shows as 1760 in transcript).

• Page 392.—20th May, 1761. John Cunningham and Sarah, of Staunton, to Walter Cunningham, of Staunton, £50, lot No. 1 in Staunton; also lot 2, of Woodland, 50 acres. Delivered.

• Page 394.—23d May, 1761. John Cunningham and Walter Cunningham, covenants, 107 acres in Beverley Manor, part of 1550 acres called Mill tract whereon Court House stands; cor. James Brown, adjoining Staunton, James Miller's line; cor. Beverley; cor. Col. Lewis' lot. Lease, 89 years. Delivered: Walter, June, 1762.

• Page 482.--19th November, 1771. John Cunningham to John Lewis Piercey (Purcy), £78, 200 acres on Thorney Branch, part of 400 acres, corner Robert Laws. Delivered: Jno. L. Piercy, 19th July, 1796.
