Administration of Samuel Cunningham's Estate

• AUGUST 21, 1747. - (259) Mary, widow of Saml. Cunningham, administers on his estate. (Note: since Samuel Cunningham died abt. 1745, the records of a will (if he did not die intestate) are probably in the Orange County, VA records. Wills and administrations were not recorded in Augusta County until Nov. 1745).

• SEPTEMBER 17, 1747. (291) Robert McClenachan moves for counter security against Mary, wife of Andrew Mitchell, late widow of Saml. Cunningham, who stated they were leaving the Colony immediately. Counter security ordered and appeal taken. Robert McClenachan appointed guardian for (Margret, see p. 310; Andrew Mitchell appointed.) Mary Cunningham, dau. of Saml. Cunningham. (Note: this establishes that Mary Cunningham, wife of Samuel Cunningham had re-married Andrew Mitchell prior to Sept. 1747. In fact, Andrew Mitchell and Mary had already had a daughter, Jean Mitchell that was baptized in Tinkling Spring Church on 4 April, 1746, so Samuel Cunningham had most likely died sometime in early 1745)

Information on Samuel Cunningham

Samuel Cunningham married Mary McKemie, daughter or sister of John McKemie. Samuel Cunningham died a very young man in 1747 (NOTE: actually it was prob. by 1745), leaving one daughter Margaret Cunningham, who married Robert Armstrong. The widow Mary Cunningham married Andrew Mitchell. Robert Armstrong and his wife Margaret settled in the Watauga Valley, and finally in Knox County, Tennessee, where they left a large family of children and great-grandchildren; the genealogists have it that they came to Tennessee by way of South Carolina, where they resided for many years. John Armstrong, a brother of Robert, married Jean Baker, a daughter of Douglass Baker and his wife Jane Thomson, daughter of Rev. John Thomson and brother in law of James Cunningham, of Cub Creek, in Charlotte County. Both Robert Armstrong and his brother John Armstrong moved to Tennesee.
