Facts and Events
Initially obtained Johanna's last name from Diana Winsor in June 1999. Found her tombstone in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo NY. Her tombstone calls her "Hannah." There are two markers at Forest Lawn. One is a monument with her name as well as that of Philip Betz. It has her birth year as 1832. Her individual marker has her birth year as 1831. 1900 Soundex records her birth as December 1831. 1890 Buffalo City Directory: shows a Johanna Betz, saloonkeeper, at 478 Eagle with Jacob Betz, machinist; initially thought this was Johanna Schlotzer Betz, but I no longer think so because in the 1900 census we find her and her family living at 26 West Avenue; a Christian Betz and his wife Elizabeth are living at 478 Eagle in 1900. There's no overlap in names of children between the two families, so I now think that the 1890 Johanna Betz at 478 Eagle is NOT our Johanna Schlotzer Betz. In 1900 soundex we find Johanna Betz, head of family, at 26 West Avenue living with her son John C (who becomes the city assessor and dies single in 1921), Elizabeth (who also never marries), and two widowed (?) daughters and their children: Johanna Betz Clabeaux (spelled Claybo in 1900 soundex) with her son William; and Eugenia (Jennie) Grass with two sons, Willard and Elmer. We also find her in the 1905 NY State Census (FHL Film #825,700, 5th E/D, 21st Ward, Block J, page 49). She is enumerated with her son John (who is head of household); see comments on his record for details.
