  3.   Many sources, including Source:Fisher, Philip A. Fisher Genealogy : Record of the Descendants of Joshua, Anthony, and Cornelius Fisher, of Dedham, Mass., 1630-1640 and even the recent (1999) article in Source:American Genealogist (D.L. Jacobus), p. 74:41 by Clifford L. Stott, say Joanna Faxon d. 1694, presumably based on Source:Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Early Records of the Town of Dedham, Massachusetts, p. 24: 1694. Joannah Fishar decesed October 16, 1694. Note, however, that the husband of this Joanna is not identified in this death record.

However, this death date is inconsistent with a second marriage to George Barber. Since the TAG article and the Fisher Genealogy don't mention this second marriage, at least they are consistent. Source:Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700 says Joan/Joanna m. (2) George Barber and still says she d. 1694 even though the second marriage would make her name Joanna Barber, not Joanna Fisher.

The record for the marriage to George Barber does not seem to have been found, but the marriage is reported in many secondary sources. For example, NEHGR, p. 152:20, or Source:Cutter, William Richard. New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, p. 118, or Source:Tilden, William S. History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886, p. 313. The NEHGR article cites Suffolk Probate file 1404, the administration of George's estate. It is presumed (but not known for sure) that this names his widow, which combined with the death record for Joan Barber in 1719, would be a good basis for accepting this second marriage as correct.

Further, Source:Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Early Records of the Town of Dedham, Massachusetts, p. 24 shows the marriage of Josiah Fisher and Joanna Morse on 1 Sep 1693. Source:Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Vital Records to the Year 1850, p. 294, shows Josiah's subsequent marriage to Abigail Greenwood on 15 Feb 1696/7, implying his wife Joanna died not long after their marriage. This sequence of marriages is also reported in the Fisher Genealogy, though it does not provide a death date for his second wife Joannah. So it seems almost certain the death of "Joannah Fishar" in Oct 1694 is the wife of Josiah Fisher, and not the widow of Anthony Fisher.

Addendum: The inventory for George Barber does mention a widow though it doesn't name her. Still this lends credence to the idea that Joanna Faxon became Mrs. Barber and lived until 1719. There is still some conflicting evidence, such as the will of Thomas Faxon, s/o Richard, and niece of Joanna, which refers to an "Aunt Fisher" in his 1690 will, which suggests Joanna did not marry George Barber. Given the imprecise way relationships were described in colonial times, I am not entirely confident this must refer to Joanna, though it strongly appears to. Considering the number of sources that seem to accept that George Barber did marry her, and the close agreement of the age at death of Joan Barber with the baptism of Joanna Faxon, it seems likely, unless conflicting evidence is found, that Joan (Faxon) Fisher did become the second wife of George Barber and did not die in 1694. --Jrich 10:07, 20 February 2010 (EST)
