Jean Courrege - Biographical Notes written by Cheryl Courrege Burguieres, August 1972:

"Jean Courrege was born February 3, 1855, in Jefferson parish (New Orleans).

He was the eldest of six children of Simon Courrege and Marie Couget, the others being:

  • Joseph Bertrand, born December 1, 1856, in Jefferson Parish. Uncle Bertrand is remembered as having a dairy in New Iberia, and later moved to Alexandria, where he had a grocery store. He is the father of Rene, Jeanne, and Paul.
  • Jean Marie, born December 9. 1863, in New Iberia. Father of Camille Courrege.
  • Marie Elie, born December, 1865, in Jefferson parish, but was to spend all but the first couple of years of her life in France.
  • Eugenie, born December 27, 1867, in France. She married Godleif Ribbeck of Houston and had four children, one being Laura (married to O. H. Kainer of Houston).
  • Alexis, born December 5, 1870, in New Orleans. Father of Pauline, Alice, Gus, and Isidore.

Eugenie (Aunt Jenny) was born in France after the family returned there in 1867, after the end of the Civil War (one official document dated March 18, 1867, gives the birth dates of Simon Courrege's then four children - such a declaration was probably needed before a return to France). It was on this return that Jean (Grandpere) and Bertrand were left in Tarbes to be educated for a number of years. it was also at this time that Marie Elie was left in France with cousins, who were to raise her temporarily. However, growing too attached to them, she remained until her death in 1951.

Jean Courrege married Marie Rodrigue in 1880 and of this union were the eleven children. In his lifetime he acquired considerable property, of which part was devoted to his livelihood slaughterhouse operation (buying cattle and selling the meat wholesale to smaller operated butchers).

Grandpere [Jean] died July 11, 1828, at the age of 73, due to complications of a hernia which had caused blockage of his kidneys. His memorial in the newspaper remembered him as a man of a quiet and unassuming disposition who was highly respected by all who knew him. He was described as being well read in the literature of the day and as being noted for his business ability, always being careful and honest. He was in the Society de Bienfaissance."
