Jane Neal was born on 28th July 1872 and baptised just over a month later at Flamstead in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw hat maker named Ann Neal, formerly Foster, and her husband Thomas Neal, an agricultural labourer.

Jane appears in the 1881 census living at Delmer End in Flamstead with her parents and siblings. Her father died in 1885, when Jane was about 13. The 1891 census finds Jane working as a straw hat machinist and living with her mother in a two-roomed widow's almshouse in Flamstead.

Jane has yet to be traced after 1891.
