Another death date for James Nowlin is 18 July 1808 in Pittsylvania Cty. He married URSULA PATTERSON about 1770 just prior to his service in the Revolutionary War; heserved a tour of 3 months to his state of VA and also served in the militia in Henry and Patrick counties in the late 1700s. They were among the first settlers in Stuart, Patrick County, VA. buying property along the Mayo River. Reportedly, James’ will states that his son Samuel is to care for his mother Ursula until she dies, and that the bulk of his estate went to Samuel’s son David (his grandson). Ursula died in Patrick county in 1839. After her death, her son Samuel and his wife Olive Shelton moved to Washington Co, Indiana to seek a new life there. His son David had moved out earlier, about 1834 with some of his brothers and sisters. One footnote is that James’ wife Ursula is recorded as applying to the U.S. government in 1832 to receive a bounty land grant pension based on his service. she didn’t have enough documentation of proof even though her husband’s best friend, James Boaz sent a letter saying that James did serve in the Revolutionary War under Capt. Wm. Johns. by the time she received the rejection letter she had died.
