Disambiguation

There was another James Houston, son of John Houston and Margaret Cunningham, that lived just north in Beverley Manor during the same time period that may be confused with this James Houston. This James Houston lived just across the border from Beverley Manor on the north end of the Borden Tract, as shown in the J.R. Hildebrand Map above.

Acquisition of Land in Augusta County, VA:

James Houston was granted a tract of land at the northeast corner of the Borden Tract before 17 October 1747, as listed in William Beverley's grant to Samuel Steele, as shown below in the J.R. Hildebrand Map (shown above) and the records section, shown below. However, the deed (or the number of acres granted) for this grant, is not listed in Chalkley's. This may be an oversight as some deeds from the 1746-1747 time period in early Augusta County may have been mis-placed or lost, according to some researchers.

Records

Teste: Robert Alexander, Robert Ramsey, John Fulton. Proved by two Roberts, 18th November, 1747. Proved by John, 22d August, 1766.
