Family lore is that James' father, William, was killed when a stand collapsed at Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837. James was raised by his aunt Margaretta Lee, dressmaker, b.1805, d.1889.

From Sept. 1987 notes of Bill Farrall: James Farrall was a builder, and carpenter who worked for a contractor named Huxley's in Malpas. He was Foreman on the job when a building called the Beeches was built in Malpas. He was a tough old nut and put the fear of God into his workers by his loud voice. Somewhere along the way he broke his jaw and he grew a long white beard to cover the scar.
