Spoiler alert!: Ida and her husband Jimmy made the front page news in 1919 when Jimmy filed for divorce. The newspaper blamed “the green eyed monster”.
Ida Elizabeth Ramsey
Ida Elizabeth Ramsey was born on February 2, 1877 in Missouri, most likely in Greene County near Springfield. When she was born, her father, John Ramsey, was 47 and her mother, Nancy Baker, was 34. She had two siblings who survived to adulthood - Daisy May Ramsey, born in 1881 and Oliver C. Perry, born in 1888. Her mother gave birth to five other children who didn’t live to adulthood and, for that matter, didn’t live long enough to be found in any records. Ida may or may not have ever known her other siblings.
It’s likely she knew very little of her father, John. When Ida was eight years old, her mother Nancy married for a second time, this time to Thornton Perry in Benton County, Arkansas. I don’t know exactly what happened between the birth of Ida’s sister Daisy in 1881 and the marriage of her mother in 1885, but my guess is that her father died. When that happened, it’s likely Ida’s mother left Missouri to be near a sister in Arkansas.
At any rate, it seems that Ida spent the bulk of her childhood in Garfield, Benton County, Arkansas, living with her mother, step-father, sister, and half-brother. Years later, Ida’s daughter would report (incorrectly) that Ida was actually born in Garfield, so Ida probably told her children stories about growing up in Garfield. She attended school through the sixth grade, and that school was probably in Garfield.
By September 4, 1897, Ida was back in Greene County, Missouri, marrying James (Jimmy) Ervin Buckner. It seems she made the move alone. Her mother and siblings were still living in Arkansas at the time. Ida was 20, and Jimmy was 21. Ida and Jimmy lived in the area of Stafford, Greene County for the next fifty years and had eight children together - Daisy M. (1899), Nora (1901), Lena E. (1905), Claude E. (1908), Maud Jane (1909), Nola (1912), Ray (1916), and Roy (1921).
After 22 years of marriage Ida and Jimmy made the front of their local paper when Jimmy filed for divorce. The newspaper article from July 5, 1919 blamed it on the “green-eyed monster”, saying, “Twenty-two years of faithful devotion as a husband were not sufficient to induce his wife to believe he was true to her and she followed him to the fields and watched from a distance, according to the petition. He also charges that his wife would tell their elder daughter that he was guilty of associating with other women and would not speak to him.” For Ida’s part, to quote the official divorce petition, “The defendant told plaintiff she did not care anything about him and that she could get along better without him than she could with him.”
They didn’t go through with the divorce. Ida and Jimmy ultimately remained married until Jimmy’s death nearly forty years later.
For what it’s worth, years later, her granddaughter Betty Bagley would describe Ida as a “timid little bitty woman” who was quiet and shy. She emphatically believes that Ida would never have done such a thing and that Jimmy must have lied.
Betty has fond memories of visiting Ida and Jimmy’s farm in the summertime. They raised their own cows and pigs, and there were always plenty of biscuits and meat waiting for the grandkids. She says that Ida was a very short woman and that Jimmy was very tall.
Sometime in last ten years of her life, Ida and Jimmy left their farm in Strafford to live in Marshfield in Webster County. Jimmy died there in 1955, and Ida died three years later, on May 27, 1958, at the home of her daughter her Nola. She was 81 years old. She was buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Polk County next to her husband Jimmy.

WIFE CHARGED WITH SPYING ON HUSBAND
Prominent Strafford Farmer Makes Several Allegations Against Wife in Petition
The "green-eyed monster," jealousy, is blamed in a suit for divorce filed yesterday with Circuit Clerk James C. Hale by James E. Buckner prominent farmer of the Strafford neighborhood against his wife, Ida E. Buckner.
Twenty-two years of faithful devotion as a husband were not sufficient to induce his wife to believe he was true to her and she followed him to the fields and watched from a distance, according to the petition.
He also charges that his wife would tell their elder daughter that he was guilty of associating with other women and would not speak to him.
All of these things caused him great mental anguish, the petition recites, and for this reason the separation is asked. He also asks for the care and custody of their seven minor children.

- ↑ Betty: Grandma was an timid little bitty woman!
Jessica: Really
Betty: I can't believe she done this. I think he lied!
Jessica: Well, they didn't go through with it, obviously.
[Betty read article.]
Betty: I can't believe this. Not Grandma. Quiet, shy woman. And that [something], never in a hundred years. Never, never, never.
Jessica: It was really weird. I found this newspaper article referring to this. I went and I found the records at the Greene County Archives
Betty: "...oldest daughters that plaintiff had been guilty of associating and having illicit relations with other women..."
Beth: One thing that's cool about it is it gets you all those names.
Jessica: Right. See, I wasn't sure I had the right people until they were listing off all the kids.
Betty: My, Grandma couldn't do that. No.
Beth: Well, there must have been some kind of an issue, Mom.
Betty: Well, she was too timid to done that.
Beth: He may have been fooling around.
Jessica: Yeah. Although it's weird that he was the one who brought up the case.
Beth: And she may have followed him out to the fields to watch him, but I can't imagine she was yelling things at him, if she's like you say.
Betty: She was softspoken, [something].
Beth: Well, if she's that timid, I can imagine she'd stand there and yell at him like that.
Jessica: Right.
Betty: No.
Beth: It doesn't make any sense.
Betty: Sheesh.
