Ida Pearl Hale apparently eloped at a very young age. When Ida's marriage to David Harold James broke up her mother took her and her children in. Ida C. sent her daughter to finishing school and took care of the children. Later, when the daughter married a promising young bank clerk and they proposed moving moving to California, Ida C. insisted on keeping the grandson Harold Raymond James.

Ida Pearl was known as Pearl and loved to have parties and entertain her friends. When her own daughter's first marriage broke up she took her and her daughter in for a short time.

When Sherman, her second husband, died, Pearl supplemented her annuities by working as a practical nurse at Midway Hospital in Los Angeles.
