Henry Copps' origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 5th October 1729, when he married Elizabeth Shambrook at Graveley in Hertfordshire. After their marriage they moved to the nearby village of Letchworth, where they had a son called Thomas baptised in 1730. Elizabeth died less than two years after Thomas's baptism. She was buried back at Graveley on 4th April 1732, aged about 28.

Henry and his son Thomas appear to have stayed in Graveley after Elizabeth's death. Thomas died when he was about eleven years old in 1741, and was buried at Graveley.

Two years later, Henry married again. He married Elizabeth Arnold on 2nd October 1743 at St Ippolyts, a little way west of Graveley. At the time of their marriage they were both described as living in the parish of Great Wymondley, which is in between St Ippolyts and Graveley.

Henry and Elizabeth moved to Letchworth after their marriage, where they had three sons baptised between 1745 and 1751, although their first son (another Thomas) died as a baby.

Henry was buried at Letchworth on 4th June 1763, when he was described as a labourer. His two surviving sons were fifteen and eleven at the time. Elizabeth survived him by about eighteen years, and she remarried later in 1763.
