George Copps was baptised on 6th December 1747 in the small village of Letchworth, Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Copps, formerly Arnold, and her husband Henry Copps, a labourer. George was the second of three sons, but his elder brother had died as a baby, making George effectively the eldest.

In 1763, when George was fifteen years old, his father Henry died. George's mother remarried later that year, with a labourer named John Collins becoming George's stepfather. John Collins died in 1768.

George died as a young man when he was only 22 years old, being buried on 15th April 1770 at Letchworth, where he appears to have lived his whole life.
