DEATH OF HENRY C. BLAIN

A Veteran Soldier and a Good Citizen Gone

Henry C. Blain passed away in death Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock at the family home, No. 1366 North Water Street, after confinement of nine days to his room, caused by paralysis and meningitis. His age was 43 years. The deceased was never strong, but he was a man of more than the average mental and physical activity, clear headed and intelligent in all his undertakings and quick to act and execute. His affliction came upon him suddenly, and although he had the best of care from his devoted wife and the attention of the most experienced physicians, he did not mend and he joined the great majority, removing from a happy home a fond husband and from the community a good citizen.

Henry Clay Blain was Born in Kosciusko county, Ind., in 1846 and moved to Decatur in 1866. He was the son of John R. Blain, and a brother of Frank J. Blain and Mrs. Theodore Nelson, of Decatur; J.C. Blain of Ottawa, Kans.; and Mrs. Jesse Yoakum, of Monticello. October 18, 1883, Miss Mattie E. Bear, daughter Miss Ephraim Bear, became the wife of the deceased, and the widow survives. There are no children. Deceased has been connected with Haworth & Sons' establishment for 10 years, during the past few years as a traveling salesman. In the time of the country's need he enlisted as a private in the 100th Indiana Infantry but was soon detailed by Gen. Howard as master of transportation for the Pontoon Bridge force, 15th and 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Frequently he had 1000 men under him. He was in the service three years.

«/i»This forenoon at 10 o'clock the funeral of the late Henry C. Blain took place from the family residence, 1366 North Water Street, and was very largely attended by veteran soldiers, employees of Haworth & sons' factory, neighbors and friends who, by their presence and kindly offices, gave evidence of the sympathy they felt for the widow in her great sorrow, and the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The floral offerings included a massive design, "Gates Ajar." from the Haworth & Sons' employees; a beautiful pillow with the words, "My Husband" in immortelles, and other offerings. Rev. Charles Manchester, of the Church of God, conducted the sad services, taking for his text the consoling words, "And I heard a voice saying, write; saying blessed are they that die in the Lord." Prayer was offered by Rev. T.W. Pinkerton, of the Christian Church, who also read a biographical sketch of the deceased. The musical selections were "Asleep in Jesus" and "God's Ways are the Best," Miss Jesse Steele, S.M. Lutz and Howard Diller, Messrs. F.M. Cox, Theodore Coleman, Harvey Mahannah, George S. Durfee, Wm. Dunnigan and Wm. Beale served as pallbearers. In the long funeral cortege the members of the Macon County Veteran Association and the employees of Haworth & Sons marched in a body, serving as an escort. The interment took place in Greenwood cemetery. Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934
