!George was a Sergeant in the Civil War. He was a farmer prior to enlisting in Union County, NC in Sept 1861 at the age of 21. He was hospitalized at Richmond, VA 30 Jul 1864. He and his brother, Joshua, lay in adjoining wards of the hospital, unaware they were next to each other. George wrote home to his father, telling him about his sickness and where he was located. Joshua did the same. Their father wrote George and told him that his brother was right next to him and to go see him. Upon receiving his father's letter, he hurried to find his sick brother. But he was too late, for Joshua had died and been buried the day before.
