Facts and Events
!Daniel left Darlington Co, SC when he was about 10 years old and moved to Union Co, NC. At an early age he was kicked on the leg by a horse, which resulted in a sore that troubled him for the remainder of his life. For eighty-two years it remained unhealed. Daniel was a farmer. In his old age, Daniel settled up his own estate. He sold his lands, divided all the money into equal parts for his children and gave or sent it to them. He retained only $180 in cash for himself for the remainder of his life. He had six sons who served in the Confederate Army at the same time. Daniel is buried in the Walters Family Cemetery. There's a family file at the Monroe, NC Library on the Walters family which includes an old tin type picture of Daniel. Daniel's family appears in the Union County, NC Census of 1850, 1860, and 1870. The Walters attended the Ebeneezer True Light Church in Union County, NC. On Sundays Daniel's grandson, Frank W. Walters, would shave him & it seemed Frank was interested in family stories. Daniel gave him the family Bible. Daniel's niece, Eunice Walters, owned the old tin type picture of Daniel. Her daughter, Sadie sent it to the late Louis Hicks of Monroe. It has been donated to the Walters family file in the Monroe Library. Sadie wrote: "You are to keep the picture of my mother's beloved Uncle Daniel. She only knew him by letters but must have written to him all her life after she could write." |
