    George Washington Smith was born on January 12, 1832, his mother's name was Ann. He had brothers, John H. Smith, Thomas T. Smith, Benjamin Artemus Smith, Simpson Smith, Nathaniel Smith, and Jeremiah Smith.

    He lived in Franklin County, Indiana when he met and married a local girl, Mary Ellen Cupp, in 1854. He was a union soldier of the Civil War having served in F Company 72nd Indiana Infantry Regiment.

    Before 1870 George and Mary Ellen moved to Iroquois Co., Illinois with their family. While there in 1873 they had a set of quadruplets, all girls. All the girls lived until about their first birthday when two of them died with what is probably whooping cough. The other two lived to be adults.

    George and Mary Ellen moved to Reno Co., Kansas in 1885. They had twelve children in all.
