Facts and Events
George Asbury is the fourth child of John Asbury and Jean Bolling. He appears constantly in the personal tax lists of Washington, Russel and Tazewell Counties along with John, William and Henry Asbury from 1782 on. He last appears in the tithables of Tazwell County in 1819. He married Mary Ann Taylor in 1780. His wife, who survived him, is apparently the Mary Ann Asbury who married John Brooks in Tazewell County, 31 May 1821.[1] George Asbury is recorded as the owner of 100 acres of land in Washington and Russel Counties up to 1799. On Mary 28, 1788 he was deeded 96 and 1/2 acres by William Garrison in Russel County, the same amount that Garrison had deeded his brother, William Asbury. This is the only land that he is recorded as owning in the land books of Tazewell County, Virginia, and it was deeded to the oldest son, William Asbury, by the other heirs after his death. However he must have owned other land for on 22 April 1817 George Asbury and Mary, his wife, deeded two tracts of land to Thomas Chandler, one of 25 acres, the amount of the other unspecified..[1] George Asbury's inventory and account of sales, a suit among his heirs in June 1822, and a deed July 11, 1823 in which the widow and other heirs deeded the 96 and 1/2 acres to William Asbury, show the following children of George and Mary Ann Asbury, their birth dates being determined approximately by the times of their marriages:.[1] References
