From the book Elcan History by Carl Rosen: At page 158: "Frances Hooper Whitworth, Green (sic) County, Alabama, to Mrs. Elizabeth Hooper Elcan (widow of Lion Elcan), New Store, Buckingham County, Virginia. 22 June 1834.

My Dear Sister:

It afforded me great pleasure to hear you were enjoying good health and was truly glad to see Spencer Elcan & his family arrive safe but was sadly disappointed that I did not see you with him.
Oh, Henry (Patrick Henry Elcan), you promised to bring your Mama to see us this spring. I have nobody except my children, Spencer (Elcan) & his family to comfort me. Spencer comes over almost every day. He says his head is so much bewildered that he cannot write. Spencer and Mr. (Jeremiah) Whitworth are riding about constantly almost to buy land. Spencer says a home he must have. They are out today looking for land. He further says Henry must write to him.

Martha (Tabb Bolling Elcan) - (Spencer Elcan's wife) and the children are well. Mrs. Bolling (Seigniora Peyton Bolling) also. They wished me to give their best love to you and Henry.

I received your present by Martha for which I am very thankful for it. Spencer said you told him to tell me to make the dress and wear it which I have done. I wore it last Sunday week to preaching and I prize it above any other dress I ever had in my life. If only I had a chance to send you one that you might wear it in remembrance of me. I should be so glad.
Sister I condole with you for the loss of my affectionate (nephew) Marcus Elcan. On the other hand the Lord gives and the Lord takest away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Now I will say something about myself and family. Through the mercies of a kind Redeemer we are all enjoying good health. NANCY, GEORGE (Nancy's 1st. husband) and JOSHUA are well. Nancy's Baby (George F. Hooper) is in very bad health. I am fearful it will never recover.
Do pray you and Lancaster, Pa.? Henry quit the old place and come out. If I could think you and Henry would come out I should be quite a new person. We are making out very well. I have a great many chickens and a very pretty gang of turkeys. Mr. Whitworth has a beautiful little crop of corn, it is thought by some of our neighbors he will make a hundred barrels with his house gang. Spencer (Elcan) has as fine a crop as any in Alabama, he says he will not take one cent less than 3000 $ for his crop of cotton that is growing, he will make a beautiful crop of corn. He was very much pleased with his overseer management during his absence.
My dear Sister write to me, write me word whether or not you ever expect to come to this country. Mr. Whitworth and all my children join me in love to you and Henry. Should providence not suffer us to meet again on earth my dear Sister may we be so favored as to spend Eternal life together in that happy place where our pleasures will be competent & where there will be no more parting forever."
