- ↑ Description: See notes for more about Flossie and Harry
- ↑ Aunt Flossie was Daddy's only living sister. She and Uncle Harry Almy were also childless. They, too, claimed me as their "adopted boy," and I spent a lot of time with them. Uncle Harry had a heart of gold, but he also had his problems. He was a constant problem to Aunt Flossie. He was another happy-go-lucky character who enjoyed spinning yarns much more than he enjoyed working. He and Aunt Flossie had a dry cleaning establishment for a while, which Aunt Flossie practically ran by herself. Uncle Harry was a "jack-leg mechanic," and worked in several garages and auto repair shops. He invented some sort of lubricant for machinery once which Daddy has told me was really pretty good stuff. But Uncle Harry was never able to get it on the market. What really bugged Daddy the most about Uncle Harry Almy were Uncle Harry's outlandish tales of the great men he had rubbed shoulders with, and of the many deeds of valor he had performed. Uncle Harry was the original "Lone Ranger" who had rescued countless maidens in distress, had fought and won many fights (though often out-numbered), and was afraid of neither man nor beast! Every time we went there he would have a new yarn to tell about himself, and Daddy would growl all the way home about "that blow-hard."
- ↑ I think Daddy was even closer to Byie's folks than he was to his own -- with the exception of his sister, Aunt Flossie.
- ↑ Aunt Flossie and Uncle Harry Almy had moved to Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. Uncle Harry had gotten a job with a defense plant there. They had bought a boat and were living on it. It was tied to a dock on the Potomac river. After a month or so at Pickett, I applied for a pass to visit them. I was given a week's pass. I rode the train up there. I didn't see too much of Uncle Harry -- I believe he was working nights and sleeping during the days. But Aunt Flossie and I had a great time -- chasing around, sightseeing, and acting like a couple of kids -- which we really were, at heart! I realize now that Aunt Flossie and I were an awful lot alike, in many ways.

- ↑ The first major tragedy of my young life occurred while we were living on Euclid. Shag disappeared one day -- we never saw him again. Daddy drove for days throughout the neighborhood and that part of the city, looking for him. I must have walked miles, calling and whistling. I was inconsolable. My best friend was gone -- we had been inseparable for almost eight years. I guess I must have become literally sick because I was in bed one day when Uncle Harry Almy came to the door. He came to my bed and in his arms he had a little, coal black, Persian kitten. The entire family knew of our Shag, of course, and they knew of my grief. Uncle Harry thought that this little kitten might somehow help me and that it might ease the pain of losing Shag. I grabbed that kitten like a drowning man grabs for a log -- and Dusty had become a member of our family! We had Dusty until World War II - almost 14 years.
