  23. Description: More on George and Mary Mounts in the notes
  24. Our "life savers" were Uncle Frank and Aunt Mamie. They lived in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, which was a half-hour streetcar ride (a "P" car going north on Broadway) from downtown L.A. … Aunt Mamie would prepare a BIG meal and Sam and I would eat until there wasn't a scrap left. We were ALWAYS hungry, and those meals at Uncle Frank's were the only real meals we had during that month.
  25. I'm sure that Sam and I could have found SOMETHING to do -- even a dishwashing job -- if we had tried hard enough, but I have always blamed Uncle Frank for us not going so. He was in some way connected with the railroad there in L.A., and he assured us from the beginning that he could get us jobs as apprentices in a plant where boxcars were constructed. Every time we went out there he would assure us that "in just a couple of days now" we would be hired. We would go back to the hotel with our heads in the clouds, and splurge the next day on 25 cent meals in the restaurant down the street. There was a telephone in the hall outside our room, and we would dash to it every time it rang, thinking that it might be Uncle Frank with good news about a job. It never was. We walked all the way out there our last night in L.A., and Uncle Frank was STILL assuring us that "jobs for apprentices will be opening up in a day or so!"
