To check:Born before parents' marriage

Sarah Dunn's family arrived in PA from NJ cir 1793 Cornelius VH's memoirs list his children, but do not include EVH Possibly the daughter of Thomas Van Horne or Matthias Van Horne?

From Great Aunt Harriet's notes: "From DAR records in Grandfather's files. Catherine Van Horne McIntyre took oath that C. Van Horne was married 1793 to Sarah Dunn. She lived with her parents. Elizabeth, eldest child of C. Van Horne and Sarah Dunn, was born 1794 and became the wife of Samuel Sloan...Harriet Hout signed"

Perhaps CVH got Sarah pregnant, and married her secretly (1793), then later openly (1798)

Another theory I have: EVH obviously thought very highly of CVH - she named a son for him. She grew up in CVH's household. AJ Sloan reported to the "History of Crawford Co." in 1885 that CVH was his GF; AJ was 15 when CVH died - surely old enough to know what was going on. No direct claim to Sarah Dunn is made though...what if she is not the mother of EVH? What if EVH is the product of CVH and an unknown woman - perhaps a slave? Could CVH have brought slave(s) with him from New Jersey? The above book does not mention slaves at all. Did CVH know he fathered EVH, and allowed her to be raised in his household, but did not claim her as a daughter in his memoirs as she was 1/2 black? Pictures of AJ Sloan (would be 1/4 black per above thoughts) look plausible for some black ancestry.

Another thought: could EVH's mother have been an indian woman? AJ's picture sems to support the slave theory though, IMHO
