According to census information, Elizabeth Sturman was born either in North Carolina or Virginia. Her surname was also spelled "Sterman" or "Stearman" in various records. [edit] From the biographical sketch of their son Ersom French found in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Vermilion County, Illinois:"George, the father of our subject, was brought up in Kentucky, where he married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sterman, in about 1800. Miss Sterman’s grandfather was a reliable, trustworthy man, which is evinced by the fact that as a guard he was with Gen. Washington for seven years during the Revolutionary War, after which he took up his residence in North Carolina, or Virginia."
