From the biographical sketch of their son Ersom French found in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Vermilion County, Illinois:

"George, the father of our subject, was brought up in Kentucky, where he married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sterman, in about 1800. Miss Sterman’s grandfather was a reliable, trustworthy man, which is evinced by the fact that as a guard he was with Gen. Washington for seven years during the Revolutionary War, after which he took up his residence in North Carolina, or Virginia."

Mysteries to Solve

Photographs of George and Elizabeth's son Humphrey suggest that he was quite tall. All of Humphrey's children and grandchildren were also tall (at least 6') and slim. One of George and Elizabeth's grandsons, George S. French of York County in Nebraska, was 6'10" tall when he enlisted as a Union soldier. Does this unusual height come from the French or the Sturman line?
