Birth Data

The 1850 census reports that Elizabeth Sawyers was 70 years old (placing birth year about 1780) and that she was born in North Carolina. In her application in September of 1851 for her husband's Revolutionary War pension, she attests that she is 73 years old placing her birth year about 1778.

Marriage Data

In her 1851 testimony, Elizabeth states that she was married on Feb. 8, 1798 in Robertson County, Tennessee, by Joseph Dorris, a Baptist preacher. Joseph Dorris is identified in the testimony as the man who was chaplain with General Jackson in the Creek War, so he would be the Rev. William Joseph Dorris (1749-abt 1822). She also says she was never married previously and has not remarried since her husband's death on Sept. 1, 1836. A search of the County Clerk's Office in Springfield, Robertson County, cannot find a record of the marriage, but it did yield the marriage bond on Feb. 7, 1798 for the marriage of James Sawyers and Elizabeth Roby.
