In this declaration and a later addenda, he claimed to have served in the Virginia militia on three occasions. He enlisted under Capt. James Trimble in Augusta County, Virginia, in the spring of 1780. He needed his father's consent since he was underage for militia service. He then served about four months on the frontiers of Greenbrier County in Virginia on guard against the Indians. He then enlisted again in January 1781 as a volunteer under Capt. Thomas Smith in Augusta County near Staunton, Col. George Moffett's Regiment. They marched to Guilford Court House in North Carolina and he was in the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. Following the battle, they retreated to "an old iron works" for a few days and then were sent home. He then enlisted once more in 1781 under Capt. James Bell in Augusta County in Col. Samuel Lewis' Regiment. They were marched through Richmond to Williamsburg in Virgina. They were moved to Yorktown in Oct. 1781 and then marched back home and discharged.
