Revolutionary War Service

James Sawyers applied for a Revolutionary War pension and made his declaration on Aug. 13, 1832 in Robertson County, Tennessee. In this declaration and a later addenda, he claimed to have served in the Virginia militia on three occasions. He enlisted under Capt. James Trimble in Augusta County, Virginia, in the spring of 1780. He needed his father's consent since he was underage for militia service. He then served about four months on the frontiers of Greenbrier County in Virginia on guard against the Indians. He then enlisted again in January 1781 as a volunteer under Capt. Thomas Smith in Augusta County near Staunton, Col. George Moffett's Regiment. They marched to Guilford Court House in North Carolina and he was in the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. Following the battle, they retreated to "an old iron works" for a few days and then were sent home. He then enlisted once more in 1781 under Capt. James Bell in Augusta County in Col. Samuel Lewis' Regiment. They were marched through Richmond to Williamsburg in Virgina. They were moved to Yorktown in Oct. 1781 and then marched back home and discharged.

I have been actively researching the James Sawyers family of Robertson County Tenn. I would be happy to share information with any one interested. My connection with James Sawyers is his oldest daughter, Nancy born Mar 13 1799. This date was found on a declaration of Elizabeth Roby Sawyers as she applied for James' Rev. War pension. She had a excerpt of her family Bible torn out and Nancy as the oldest child was shown with her birth date with the proof of her marriage to James. I have found many land transfers and proof of James Henry Sawyers, Jr. living in Robertson County. Nancy Sawyers married my ggggrandfather Daniel Williams. Cannot find proof of their marriage but she is listed in James Sawyers will as Nancy Williams with Nancy and Daniel's children are all listed. Nancy Williams is in several Robertson Cty census with her children as well as Elizabeth Roby Sawyers with her daughters Emily, Elizabeth and Rachel. I also have copies of the wills of Elizabeth and Rachel who mentions their sister, Nancy Williams and her children.. According to my records James Henry Sawyers, Jr. was the son of Sampson Sawyers and Agnes Unknown. I would love any information pertaining to reseach as to whether this Sampson was the signer of the Cumberland Compact. His age would have been right but wonder why he went back to Va. My records show he died Oct 1817 in Augusta Va. Look forward to hearing from you in regard to the Sawyers research...
