Elizabeth Arthur was baptised on 22nd September 1776 at Betchworth in Surrey, daughter of Jane Arthur, formerly Tidy, and her husband Samuel Arthur.
On 27th December 1808, aged 32, Elizabeth married William Hart, an agricultural labourer, at the nearby town of Dorking. He was eight years her senior. Between 1809 and 1818 they went on to have four children baptised at Dorking.
Back in Betchworth, Elizabeth’s mother died in 1811.
In 1816 Elizabeth and William’s abode was given as Butter Hill, a street in the town centre of Dorking. By 1818 they had moved to Holmwood, to the south of the town. Elizabeth’s father died in Betchworth in 1818.
Sometime between 1818 and 1841 Elizabeth and William left Dorking and moved about twenty miles south to Shipley in Sussex, which is where William was originally from. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth and William living at Greenstreet in Shipley, along with their recently widowed son William and his baby son. Sadly their grandson died a few weeks later.
The 1851 census also finds Elizabeth and William living at Greenstreet in Shipley, both described as paupers. Their son William and his second wife and family lived next door.
Elizabeth’s husband William died in March 1854, aged 85. Elizabeth survived him by three years. She died at the age of eighty. She was buried at Shipley on 20th May 1857.
