Samuel Arthur’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests that he was born around 1730.

Samuel’s first confirmed sighting is on 17th April 1770, when he married Jane Tidy at Betchworth in Surrey. He appears to have been about 24 years her senior.

After their marriage Samuel and Jane went on to have eight children baptised at Betchworth between 1771 and 1791.

Jane died in February 1811. She was said to be 56 years old. Samuel survived her by seven years. He died in 1818, being buried at Betchworth on 17th June. He was said to be 87 years old. His last abode was given as Gadbrook, a small hamlet to the south of Betchworth.
