Jane Tidy’s origins have yet to be established for certain. The age given when she died suggests that she was born around 1754. One possibility is that she was the Jane Tidy baptised at Betchworth in Surrey on 18th January 1755.

Jane’s first confirmed sighting is on 17th April 1770, when she married Samuel Arthur at Betchworth. She was probably only 15 or 16 when they married, and he appears to have been about 24 years her senior.

After their marriage Jane and Samuel went on to have eight children baptised at Betchworth between 1771 and 1791.

Jane died in 1811, being buried at Betchworth on 15th February. She was said to be 56 years old. Samuel survived her by seven years.

This would appear to be the most likely baptism, being around the time implied by the age given when Jane died and in the same parish. It is worth noting that there was a Jane Tidy buried at Betchworth on 20th February 1757, which could be either the child or the mother from this baptism, or someone completely different.
