William Hart was baptised on 18th September 1768 at Shipley in Sussex, son of Sarah Hart, formerly Parker, and her husband Thomas Hart.
On 27th December 1808, aged forty, William married Elizabeth Arthur at Dorking in Surrey, some twenty miles north of Shipley. He was described as a bachelor, at a time when forty was unusually old for a first marriage. Elizabeth was eight years his junior. Between 1809 and 1818 they went on to have four children baptised at Dorking.
Back in Shipley, William’s father died in 1810.
In 1816 William and Elizabeth’s abode was given as Butter Hill, a street in the town centre of Dorking. By 1818 they had moved to Holmwood, to the south of the town.
William’s mother died in Shipley in 1826.
Sometime between 1818 and 1841 William and Elizabeth left Dorking and moved back to Shipley. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth and William living at Greenstreet in Shipley, along with their recently widowed son William and his baby son. Sadly their grandson died a few weeks later.
The 1851 census also finds William and Elizabeth living at Greenstreet in Shipley, both described as paupers. Their son William and his second wife and family lived next door.
William died aged 85 and was buried at Shipley on 29th March 1854. Elizabeth survived him by three years.
