Edward Kelly was born on 27th November 1873 at Birkenhead in Cheshire, the son of Catherine Kelly, formerly Ralston, and her husband Dennis Kelly, a boilermaker. Edward was the sixth (but fifth surviving) of the couple's eleven children.

In 1895, aged 21, Edward married Margaret Mooney. They went on to have twelve children together between 1896 and 1919, although four of them died young. In the 1901 census Edward and Margaret were living with Margaret's sister Alice, who had married a James Laing. By 1911 they were living at 34 Queensbury Street, and Edward described himself as a cattle drover working in lairage, presumably associated with the docks.

Margaret appears to have died in 1924, aged 51. Edward survived her by fourteen years and died in 1938 in Birkenhead, aged 65.
