  3.   :In all probablity, this is the David, son of Capt. John Smith who was christened at Tinkling Springs, Augusta County, Va on 19 July 1741. Capt. John Smith owned lands on the James River at Pattonsburg and built a Fort there. Vause's Fort where Capt John Smith was captured and three of his sons were killed was just south of this location where Shawsville is now located.

:Jonathan Smith also seems to have been in the Botetourt County area and is most likely the son of Capt. John Smith who was baptized 22 Jul 1744 at Tinkling Springs.

:Louisa, daughter of Capt. John Smith married Hugh Reese Bowen. The Bowens are interconnected with David Smith, his daughter Jemima married William Bowen.

:George Skillern was Executor of John Smith's Last Will and testament in Botetourt County, Va and noted as his "well-beloved friend." John Beale married Margaret Skillern, daughter of George. John Beale was neighboring landowner of David Smith.

: Margaret who married William Snow was listed with surname of Nandine at the time of her 1789 marriage In Botetourt County, VA. There were Vandine families near the Smith's, but no evidence she was a Smith.
William Snow was listed in Botetourt Tax Lists in 1799 with 2 Tithables and 4 horses.

:Though historians have stated Col. John Smith died in Rockingham County, VA and is buried on the estate of his son Daniel there. This seems highly unlikely. Col. Smith was living in Botetourt County, VA at the time of his death. He made his last will and testmanet there in 1779, which was probated there in 1783. He was living there as late as 19 Oct 1782. At which time Andrew Boyd states: "Colonel Smith would make a good witness for us, but is an ancient man." The Preston Papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts. Vol. 1. p. 143. 5 QQ111. State Historical Society of Wisconsin. 1915. Edited by Milo N. Quailfe. It is most highly probable Col. John Smith died and is buried in Botetourt County, VA. His son Daniel pre-deceased him in Rockingham County, VA.
