David Gilliland was born circa 1767 at Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of James Gilliland and Hannah Laird.1 On January 21, 1797, David purchased 600 acres of land in Washington County, Virginia from William Kennedy for £162.18s.4d.3 On August 25, 1799, David sold 326 acres of land to James Gilliland, Jr. for $1.00 at which time James was to advertise the land for sale in a local newspaper. This was to satisfy the following debts that David had: £100 payable to Tremble Conn; £81 to John Gilliland, and £30 to James for going to Cumberland. This deed was signed by David and witnessed by John and William Gilliland.4 On September 17, 1799, David was issued a land warrant for 45 acres of land lying on the south side of the south fork of the Holston River, joining the land of William Bradshaw, James Gilliland (doesn't say if Jr. or Sr.), and Thomas Berry.5 On July 9, 1800, David was issued another land warrant for 40 acres of land in Washington County, Virginia lying on the south side of the south fork of the Holston River.6 And on November 2, 1801, David was issued a third warrant for another 40 acres of land joining his other land on the Holston River.7
David Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Washington County, Virginia, with a household listed as one male 26-44, one female under 10, and one female 10-15.8 Between April 10, 1816 and February 2, 1819, David received land, situated on both sides of the south fork of the Holston River, through warrant No. 5796.9
David Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Washington County, Virginia, with a household listed as one white male 10-15, one white male 45 & up, one white female 16-25, and one white female 45 & up, with one person engaged in commerce.10 In conformity with a survey made April 4, 1820, by virtue of a land office treasury warrant, #5796, issued November 23, 1816, David was granted a parcel of land containing 15 acres situated in Washington County on the south side of the south fork of the Holston River bounded by James Gilliland senior's land.11 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Washington County, Virginia, enumerated 14 September 1850, living in the household of his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret & Christian Catron.
