    James Gilliland was born between 1766 and 1784.2 He was the son of James Gilliland and Hannah Laird.1 On August 25, 1799, David Gilliland sold 326 acres of land to James for $1.00 at which time James was to advertise the land for sale in a local newspaper. This was to satisfy some debts that David had.3 James Gilliland married Martha Keys on 18 September 1800 at Washington County, Virginia.4 They were married by minister Charles Cummings who was a Presbyterian.5 On October 13, 1804, James was issued a land warrant for 100 acres of land lying on the south side of the south fork of the Holston River joining his other land and the land of his father James Gilliland, Sr.6 James Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Washington County, Virginia, with a household listed as two white males under 10, and one white male 26-44. There were no females listed. It is assumed that Martha was dead by then though no death or burial record has been found yet.
