Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 272.--21st May, 1747. Benjamin Bordin, &c., to David Dryden, tailor (sold in testator's lifetime); 130 acres, 2 R., 14 P., £3.16.0 current money Virginia, part of 92,100; line of John Pattison's land; corner to Wm. Baskins. Witnessed and acknowledged as above.

David Dryden's will--To wife, Dorothy, large Bible to be left by her to Nathaniel, and also both Boston's Works; to son, Thomas, 1 dollar; to son, James, 1 dollar; to son, David, 1 dollar; to daughter, Elinor; to daughter, Jane; to daughter, Elizabeth; to sons, Nathaniel and William. Executors, Saml. Lyle and son James. Teste: John and William Thompson, John Moor. Proved, 18th August, 1772, by J. and W. Thompson. Executors qualify.

• Page 193.--13th March, 1774. Recorded. David Dryden's appraisement by Alex. McClure, James Thompson, Wm. Ramsey--1 note on Patrick Porter, of North Carolina, payable November, 1772. Legacies appraised, viz: To wife, Dorothy, son Nathaniel, son William, son Thomas.

• Page 527.--19th August, 1777. David Dryden's estate settled by Samuel Lyle--1773, March 2, paid John McCollom, Jr.; legacies paid August 27th, to James Dryden, Elliner Dryden, Thomas Dryden, Nathan Dryden, Wm. Dryden, Dorothy Dryden, David Dryden; 1772, September 10th, received from Thomas Leekey; October 31st, Mathew Elder; 1776, August 27th, Dominick Moran.

Processioning List of 1755 & 1760

"Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:

• Page 842.--29th August, 1750. John McNabb to Baptist McNabb, 218 acres in Borden's tract, sold by Borden to John Patterson, and by Patterson to Jno. McNabb, 25th September, 1742, on Mill Cr.; corner David Dryden; corner Arthur McClure. Teste: David Dryden, Chas. Campbell, Francis Beatey. (Note: John McNabb's son William McNabb married David Dryden's daughter Elizabeth Dryden).

• Page 472.--20th December, 1752. William Jamison's will. Wife, Sarah, executrix. Eldest son, John; 237 acres on Jackson River. Sons, George and Andrew. Son, William. Teate: Saml. Hodge, Thos. Gillham. 21st March, 1753, proved by both witnesses, and Sarah qualified, with sureties David Dryden, Robert Armstrong.

• Page 42.--15th May, 1754. Saml. McClure's bond as guardian (appointed) to Halbert McClure, orphan of Jno. McClure, with sureties Richd. Woods, David Dryden. (Note: this record provides evidence of his relationship to the family of Halbert McClure, the probable father of his wife, Dorothy McClure. Both the Samuel McClure and John McClure listed in this record were sons of Halbert McClure, who died in 1754 in Augusta County, and probable brothers-in-law of David Dryden).

• Page 317.--19th February, 1756. Nathan McClure to Alexander McClure, £38, 166-1/2 acres on North Branch of James. Cor. Jno. McClure; cor. Francis Allison. Teste: David Dryden. Delivered: Alexander McClure, June, 1778.

• Page 18.--5th February, 1761. Nathaniel McClure's will--Wife, Mary; eldest son, Holbert, £10 to cure his sore leg, above his share; sons, James and Nathan? (their young brother and sisters). Rest of children, viz: Halbert, Mary, Alexander, Hanah, Thomas, Margaret, Dorothy, Moses. Young sons to be put to trades. Executors, Alexander and Moses McClure and Archd. Alexander. Teste: David Dryden, Wm. Carleton, Hannah Allison. Proved, 19th May, 1761, by Dryden and Carleton. Executors refuse. Administration granted widow Mary, who qualifies, with John Allison, Saml. McClure, Baptist McNabb. Mary's mark ( ), Allison's mark ( ), McNabb's mark ( ). (Note: Nathaniel McClure is the probable brother-in-law of David Dryden. Also note that Nathaniel named a daughter Dorothy, most likely after his probable sister, Dorothy McClure, wife of David Dryden).

Settlement of Stophel White's estate by Jacob Anderson, recorded--Funeral charges, viz: 1 shirt, £1, 0, 0; muslin for a cale, £5, 0; 1 sheet, 5 yds., £17, 6; 7-3/4 gallons liquor, £1, 3, 3; 6 lbs. cheese, £3.9; bords and cofen and nails; £13, 6; 1-1/2 bu. flour (76 lbs.), £7, 3; 6 lbs. for shortening for said bisket, £0, 3, 5; vendue liquor, 2 gals., 1 pt., £6, 4-1/2 Paid James Arbuckle, David Galloway. Stophel White's vendue, sold to viz: David Drein, Jacob Anderson, Alex. Miller. Isaac Anderson, Marion Crawford, Alex. Telford, David Dryden, Baptist McNabb, David Telford.

• Page 116.--17th August 1765. Samuel Porter, of Dromore township. County of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, schoolmaster, by John Mitchel, of Augusta County, to James Dryden, £26, 300 acres below the Fork of Buffalo Creek. Teste: David Dryden, Arthur McClure. Delivered: David Dryden, son of James, 1st April, 1791.

• Vol. 2 - SEPTEMBER, 1805 (A to D). - Dryden vs. Lyle--Ejectment. Deposition of James Dryden: Thomas Dryden was eldest son of David Dryden, deceased. Nathanl. Dryden, plaintiff, is eldest son of Thomas. Both Thomas and David are dead. Nathaniel and Wm. Dryden, younger sons of David, are both dead. Defendant, with Saml. Lyle, father of defendant, was executor of his father's will. Thos., father of Nathaniel, died before 1787.

• Page 197.--10th May, 1808. William Johnston's will--To wife, Jane; to brother-in-law, Wm. McKnob, living on Watago, North Carolina; to Katherine Kerns, wife to Alexander Kerns; to half-sister, Jane Shields, wife to Patrick Shields, living near mouth of Missouri River; to Hugh, Ruery, and Lilah Dreddan, children of Wm. Dreddan, of Madison County, Kentucky; to sons and daughters of David Dreddan, living on South Fork of Holston River; to tenant, Henry Hartman. Executors, James and Robert Rankin. Teste: Michael Cline, Henry Hartman, Jr.; Henry Hartman, Sr. Proved, 27th June, 1808. 27th March, 1809, James Rankin qualifies. (Note: David Dryden's children are listed in this will of William Johnston, who was David Dryden's wife's son, born after his wife Dorothy had re-married after his death. It lists his son-in-law William McNabb (who married David's daughter Elizabeth, his daughter Jane Shields, (who married Patrick Shields), and his sons William and David Dryden).
