Peters, Christian - born 10/16/1760 in Rockingham [then Augusta*] County, Virginia, where he entered service in 1780; father born in Germany; soldier moved in 1789 to Monroe County, Virginia, where granted Pension 1832 when resided in Peterstown per Conrad Peters (no kinship given), County Justice of the Peace, John Hutchison, County Court Clerk; soldier's brother John resided then in Giles County, Virginia; County Justice of the Peace James A. Dunlap, Samuel Clark & Henry Alexander made affidavit then in Monroe County, Virginia; John Dunn made affidavit then there that he entered service 1781 in Rockingham County, Virginia, with soldier; soldier's sister mentioned but not named; query letter in file in 1926 from descendant Miss Bertha Lewis Clark, Baltimore, Maryland, formerly of Monroe County, Virginia, who was also a descendant of Virginia Revolutionary War soldier Daniel Clark of latter County; query letter in file says soldier died in Peterstown, West Virginia, brother John also was a Revolutionary War soldier; query letter in file in 1826 from descendant Isabel Symms (Mrs. C.W.)     Born in the Plains District of Rockingham Co., VA, Christian was the son of Johan Jacob and Elizabeth Peters.

    On 1 June, 1779, he enlisted for military service in the Revolutionary War under Captain Robert Cravans and Jeremiah Beasley and was in the Virginia Line under Major Jack Willis and Generals Green, Morgan and Campbell. Rising in the ranks to sergeant, he took part in battles at Cowpens, Hot Water and Jamestown and assisted in the capture of Tories in the Black Swamp, NC. He was known as an expert marksman and carried his own rifle, tomohawk and butcher knife throughout his army service. He and his brother, Capt. John Peters, were at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781.

    On May 3rd, 1785, he married Anna Katherine Fudge. Along with his brother John and friend Charles Walker and their families, they migrated to the Peterstown, VA (now WV) area in 1789. Christian became a substantial and prominent citizen and built the town's first grist mill. His home was located two miles east of town. Peterstown was named after him.

    Christian and Anna were the parents of: Rebecca (md. Samuel Pack), Conrad Lewis (md. Clara Snidow), Capt. John (md. Elizabeth Spangler and Cynthia Clark), Jacob, Mary "Molly" (md. Thomas Dunn), Elizabeth (md. John Symms), Jane (md. Mr. Spangler), Rhoda (md. Charles Spangler), Nancy (md. Elias Hale), and Sarah "Sallie" (md. George Spangler.
