Facts and Events
The 2-Feb-1974 Madison Courier article, Family Tree, Twigs and Chips states that Charles SPENCER moved to Jessamine Co., KY around 1795 and died there in 1812. I believe this to be incorrect. The marriage bonds show that the family was still present in Campbell Co., VA in 1803. They also state that Charles SPENCER was deceased on 11-Jul-1803. I also believe that it is probable that he was dead on 8-Dec-1794 since that marriage bond was signed by his wife. If he was alive, I believe that he would have given his consent. Since William SPENCER is supposed to have been born on 6-Apr-1795, Charles must have died between Jul and Dec-1794. Further support for this position can be found in the census records for Jessamine Co., KY. The first time that the SPENCER's appear in the census is 1810. If they had come in 1795, they should have been listed in the 1800 census. The 1810 census (KY, Jessamine) shows Charles R. SPENCER, males: 10-16 (1), 16-26 (2), females: 16-26 (1), 26-45 (1). I believe that this is Charles R. and Absolam SPENCER. Since they were neither married in 1810, I also believe that the others are other members of their family. The other male's age would be right for William. The younger female could be Nancy. The older female's age is not right for their mother. The SPENCER's are supposed to be descended from three brothers who fought with Cromwell in the English Civil War. When he lost, the brothers escaped to America. They settled in NY, MA and MD.
