Person:Charles Honnyng (1)

Born in St Margaret's, Ipswich circa 1563. Pictured in a falling collar, plate armour, the pauldrons trimmed with red, and a red sword-belt from his right shoulder; his right hand holding a halbert, and the left on the hilt of his sword; red cross on his shield.

Military Career

He is listed as a Captain in the Netherlands expeditionary forces of the Earl of Leicester in December 1585. A Charles HONINGE continued to serve in the Netherlands, along with John WINGFELDE, in 1588 and 1589; this seems to contradict the red cross death-mark in the 1585 portrait. In 1588 John WINGFIELD and Charles HONING are amongst those holding the town of Geertrudenberge during a siege; and in 1589 it was reported that Sir John WINGFIELD and Captain HUNNINGS, presumably the same Charles, were sent as prisoners to Breda. After his imprisonment at Breda in Aril 1589, Charles joined the English campaign in France under Lord Willoughby in September 1589. Charles died "of sickenesse" as the army marched across France in mid winter - see Camden's Annales for 1589, section 12.
