"Mother's parents [Bothilda and Lasse Uglum] left a very nice farm home in Sogndal, Sogn, Norway, to give their family of seven children a chance for a better life. Grandfather (Lasse Uglum) had asthma and couldn't work. In 1889, he emigrated to the United States to find a suitable location for his family. He chose Adams, Minnesota. He decided that this Scandinavian community was just the right location for his family."[2]

"Grandmother, Bothilda Fimrite Uglum, crossed the ocean with her seven children the following year, 1890. The oldest of the four boys was 14. She carried one of the girls, the next younger hung onto her skirt, and the third girl was timid and fearful. But the boys were inquisitive. She feared losing them in the crowd on Ellis Island, so she got a rope and tied them together. And, too, some sailors of that time were a "salty" breed."[2]

"Within their first year in America, Grandfather died--leaving Grandma (pregnant with her 8th child) homeless, and unable to speak a word of English. What did she do? A kind neighbor, who had just moved out of her log cabin into a house they had built, offered to let the family occupy the cabin rent free! Then, she sold them a cow (on time) so that they would have milk. Grandmother told the boys that if they would go out and work and bring their money home, they could all stay together. That is what they did."[2]

"The four boys never attended school. The girls, on the other hand, were fortunate enough to get a bilingual teacher who nurtured them. Their teacher was a high school graduate! Mother and her two sisters finished the 8th grade in rural school. And, all of them became teachers."[2]

Ancestry

"Many relatives on my mother's side have been researching our Norwegian heritage. . . . And yes, this Fimrite line is finished back through King Harold "Fairhair" Haarfagre, the first king of United Norway who reigned from 872 to 930 A.D. He, of course, was one of those Viking Kings!"[2]
