Education and Teaching
"After finishing grade school, Mother [Isabel] came up to Austin, Minnesota, to attend Southern Minnesota Normal College. She enrolled in a two-year course which qualified the graduates as grade school teachers. She earned her room and board as a domestic for the Crane family. Mr. Crane was in the lumber business."[4]
"Mother learned of the teaching opportunities in North Dakota, and found them very enticing. She took a teaching job in a rural school north of White Earth, ND. And, she filed on a claim--160 acres of free land, virgin soil. Claim holders were required to pick the rocks, haul them on a stoneboat to the perimeter of the field, and "break" 5 acres each year."[4]
"They also had to live on the claim a few months each year. Mother had a small "shack" built and bought a rifle for protection!"[4]
"During the school year, she lived with Nettie and Ole Gilbertson, drove her buggy to school, stoked and banked the fire in the potbelly stove so that the classroom would be warm when the students arrived. And, she struggled to keep her students speaking English. Many of the families in the school district were Norwegian immigrants, and it was Mother's role to teach them English, even on the playground at recess time."[4]
