Arthur Nicholls was born on 19th January 1909 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, son of a straw hat machinist named Annie Maria Nicholls, formerly Moles, and her husband George Nicholls, a bricklayer. He appears in the 1911 census living with his parents and siblings at Wheathampstead Road (now called Southdown Road) in Harpenden. Arthur with his parents and siblings in about 1918
Arthur's father died in 1931.
In 1937, Arthur married Evelyn Jessie Cooper, who was from the nearby village of Markyate. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 30 High Street in Markyate, and Arthur was working as a leaded light glazier. They went on to have a daughter and a son in the early 1940s.
Arthur died in 1973, aged about 64. Evelyn outlived him by 30 years.
