Evelyn Jessie Cooper was born on 8th June 1907 at Markyate in Hertfordshire, daughter of a Helen Cooper, formerly Gray, and her husband Thomas Arthur Cooper, a painter and decorator. Evelyn appears in the 1911 census living with her parents and sister at 105 High Street, Markyate.
In 1937, aged about 30, she married Arthur Nicholls, who was from nearby Harpenden. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 30 High Street in Markyate, and Arthur was working as a leaded light glazier. Evelyn and Arthur went on to have a daughter and a son in the early 1940s.
Arthur died in 1973. Evelyn outlived him by about 30 years, and moved to Cornwall after his death, dying there in 2003, aged 96.
