Minnie Nicholls was born on 26th June 1903 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw hat machinist named Annie Maria Nicholls, formerly Moles, and her husband George Nicholls, a bricklayer's labourer. The 1911 census finds the family living at Wheathampstead Road (renamed Southdown Road in 1923). Minnie with her parents and siblings in about 1918
Minnie married Ernest Arthur Kingham in 1925, who was also from Harpenden. They had two sons, both born in the Harpenden area in the late 1920s. Some time between 1929 and 1939 the family moved to the north-western suburbs of London, where Ernest worked on the railways, based at the London Midland and Scottish Railway's sidings at Cricklewood. In 1931 Minnie's father died.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Minnie and Ernest were living at 16 Midland Brent Terrace, immediately overlooking the railway. Back in Harpenden, Minnie's mother died in 1944.
Ernest died in 1989, aged 87. Minnie outlived him by about 15 years, in which time she moved from London to Devon. She lived to be 101 years old and died in 2005.
