"One of three brothers who arrived in America in the 1700's from Wales. Jacob Edgar settled in VA in late 1700's. Was a miller by trade." (GGrD. Eva Winifred Thomas Dowell). 1850 U.S. Census shows Archibald, age 63, living in Mad River Twp., Champaign Co., OH, with wife, Catharine (Swimley), age 55, and children, (dau. illegible), 20, John E., 20, Lewis T., 18, Rebecca, 16, and Sarah, 10. Occupation noted as farmer. Real estate value, $800. 1860 U.S. Census shows Archibald, age 74, living in Urbana Twp., Champaign Co., OH, with wife, Catharine, age 64, and children, Sarah, 19, Thornton, 26, and John, 30. Occupation noted as farmer. Real estate value, $1000. Personal effects, $200. "Three brothers came from Wales and settled in Virginia before the Revolution. Archibald Thomas was a descendent of one of these brothers. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. Jacob S. Thomas, my grandfather was born in 1812 while his father was in the army. Jacob S. married Elizabeth Stanley. They lived in Ohio, close to Dayton. They had eleven children. My father Benjamin Franklin was the oldest. He was born in 1835. Sometime before the Civil War, they moved to Peru, Ind. Jacob S. was a miller. He owned a mill on the Wabash River. My father B. F. Thomas enlisted in the Civil War in 1861. He was in the 12th Indiana Cavalry. He served in the Army until the end of the War. He was in the Battle of Lookout Mt. in Tenn. He had a brother, Robert, who was a soldier also. He died in the South from drinking water from a poisoned spring or from poisoned milk. They never knew which. He was only 19 years old." Smith) Archibald Thomas came to Caesar’s Creek in 1829 from Virginia; died in 1862 near Urbana, Ohio. (Greene Co. [OH] Pioneers, 1803-1840, Geo. F. Robinson, 1902) "Born in Maryland, of Welsh-Irish descent. Husband of Catharine Swimley, and father of Jacob S. and twelve other children. Archibald was son of Leonard, and was born 11 April 1787, and was a soldier in 1812.
